Mateusz Szczurek is a graduate of the Faculty of Economic Sciences. He received his doctorate at the University of Sussex in 2005, and the theme of his work were crises and international liquidity. In 1998 and 2007 took place econometrics courses at the International Center for Money and Banking Studies in Geneva and London. In 1994-1997, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at Warsaw University and Columbia University in the City of New York, School of International and Public Affairs. In 1997, he obtained Master of Arts in economics from the international University of Sussex.

For many years associated with ING. In the years 1997-2011 he was an economist of ING Barings and chief economist of ING Bank Slaski. In March 2011, he was chief economist at ING Central and Eastern Europe.

Szczurek became head of the Ministry of Finance in November last year. Previously, he was one of the known economic commentators. Immediately after assuming the post of Minister announced changes, which on one hand would make a more friendly tax authorities to taxpayers, on the other hand would effectively prosecute tax evaders and reduce the general government deficit ratio to GDP. According to the Minister balanced fiscal policy is the foundation, which lacks many countries in Europe.

Directed by Szczurek Ministry has prepared changes in the law that will allow the administration to some taxpayers were replaced by a duty to fulfill PIT. It was also decided that the creation of publicly available register of debtors who are in arrears with the payment of taxes, duties or fees. Voluntary regulating tax arrears is to be awarded payment of lower interest.

The new minister announced the start of work on the new tax ordinance. Do not conceal the fact that due to the extensive matter, they will last for years, but Prime Minister Donald Tusk declared that he will not be rushed. Rat stressed that entrepreneurs need to create the conditions to its potential and power directed at true innovation and not, for example, avoiding taxes. It was decided that the preparation of the project will address established for this purpose, the Commission Codification of the General Tax Law.

Szczurek made it clear that in the case of the state can not afford to frostbite or raising tax thresholds tax-free amount. However, in the Ministry headed by a project of increasing tax credits for children.

At the beginning of September during a conference organized by the influential Bruegel Institute in Brussels has proposed the creation of a pan-European EU policy makers fund. The fund would finance major European projects in the energy, transport, IT and defense sector.

Szczurek teaches economics at the School of Economics in Warsaw, University of Sussex and the Goethe Business School in Frankfurt. He was co-founder and president of the Association of Graduates of British Universities. He is a member of the Society of Polish Economists.
