The EU is ready in December to extend sanctions against Russia ws. Ukraine – The Banker

the European Union, most likely in December will extend economic sanctions on Russia in connection with the conflict in Ukraine, but may have difficulties to resume them in the future, if the future US President Donald Trumpowi will be able to warm relations with the Kremlin.

trump, who in January of the following year will be sworn in for President, said he wants “good relations” with Russia and its President Vladimir Putin that has caused concern in some countries in the EU obawiających policy changes, which zmiękczałaby the American position in relation to the Ukrainian crisis, says Reuters.

Sanctions were first imposed on Russia soon after in 2014 zaanektowała it is owned by Ukraine, the Crimea, and then was extended for six months.

in Five European diplomats told Reuters that he expects the EU leaders will continue next month in Brussels the major economic sanctions even before trump takes office. The decision requires the consensus of the 28 member States of the EU. Economic sanctions extended for the last time in July of this year, and they are to the end of January 2017.

the Easing of these restrictions, the EU is dependent on the full implementation of the Minsk agreements on the settlement of the conflict in the Donbass in Eastern Ukraine between Ukrainian government forces and Pro-Russian separatists. But some EU countries appear calls for the lifting of sanctions.

“Still should reach extension (sanctions) in December. No in the event of a change of the situation in Ukraine (…) there’s really no reason to not to renew,” said a European diplomat. “Later, after the inauguration of trump, who knows where it will lead us. This can become much more difficult, expensive”, – he added.

trump is not yet skonkretyzował, what will he do to restore relations with Russia. Unijni diplomats fear – according to Reuters – that the softening of the American position will be used by the Kremlin in the hope of weakening the position of EU on the issue of sanctions.

“When trump is sworn in in January, if it comes to a rapprochement with Putin, pogłębią units in the EU in respect of Russia, and the continuation of the sanctions will be more difficult,” – said the diplomat Reuters in Brussels.

Another representative of the EU said “the EU should take its own decision in December, but the complications will come if, in January, the United States confirmed that they are going to change their policies. This can affect the unity of the EU”.

Minister of economic development of Russia Alexei Uljukajew expressed on the pages of German magazine “Die Welt’ hope for the lifting of sanctions after coming to power new President of the USA of Donald trump.

Uljukajew said in an interview for the Friday edition of “Die Welt” that the change of the President is a “good opportunity” for the elimination of sanctions. “We will do everything to use this opportunity”, – said Russian politician.

As he said, Russia did not support in the election campaign of any candidate. “There is a possibility that trump is free from obligations, which involved Hillary Clinton as a person, which is the element of the current system of decision-making,” said Uljukajew. Trump is independent from this system, he added.

according to the Russian Minister, currently offers a “window of opportunity”. “Using this opportunity depends on us and our partners,” he objected Uljukajew.

As appreciated, the Russian economy has already adjusted to Western sanctions, which currently have only “symbolic value”. “In the first year was painful, now not anymore,” he said.
