Kolodko: Uneven distribution of income threatens civilization – Puls Biznesu

Prof. Grzegorz Kolodko delivered in Polish Economic Society lecture Fri. “Whither the world”. The occasion was to give him the Special Jury Award of Honour PTE for scientific achievements and promoting Polish economy in the world. The award was conferred for the first time.

As he spoke in eulogy chairman of the Scientific Council of PTE prof. Boguslaw Fiedor, achievements Kołodko more than 400 publications, including 50 monographs, publications translated into 26 languages. Only the book “Wandering World” has been translated into 10 languages. He emphasized that we are dealing with the professor, whose achievements not only in science but also in the sphere of popularization “is widely known and appreciated.” Although it is sometimes, he added, criticized by some or called into question, as in the social sciences, however, is normal.

During his lecture Kolodko argued that the question “Whither the world?” is related to the question where the economy is heading.

He said that worries him some economists attempt to distance themselves from social issues and focusing on too formal, almost mathematical terms of economics. “You can not inject life even in the most complicated mathematical formula” – he argued.

He argued that if you keep economists will “cherish GDP as the most synthetic measure at the macroeconomic level,” and as the main objective of economic activity, it will lose sight of the “many aspects of human functioning.”

Today, in the framework irreversible, according to Kołodko, the process of globalization, economists would do well to answer questions like “coordinate the power of the invisible hand of the market with the power of visible political coordination” .

The other key question that should have to answer, he said Kolodko, how to share the effects of labor productivity growth – because you have to divide them differently than now – he argued.

According Kołodko is not true Indeed, that technological progress and the growth of the economy efektowności must be associated with build-up of imbalances. “An example of Nordic countries shows that less can be divided unevenly, while improving the competitiveness and efficiency of the economy”, – emphasized.

In contrast, the unequal distribution turns against economic growth because more and more causes social tensions and protests that influence indirectly on the economy – he argued.

As an example, called the data from the latest “World Happiness Report” (report, comparing the level of satisfaction societies of individual countries), which shows that Poles are on 60 place when it comes to happiness , one place behind Belarus. At the head of the ranking is Switzerland, and in the top ten are the Scandinavian countries, which pay special attention to the more even distribution.

Kolodko also argued that economics should be the future more and more interdisciplinary science – are increasingly pay attention primarily all on ecology and social issues.

Prof. Grzegorz Kolodko is currently affiliated with the Academy of them. Kozminski University. In the past, it was twice Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance – in 1994-97 (in the government of Waldemar Pawlak, Józef Oleksy and Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz) and in 2002-03 (in the office Leszek Miller).
