Freight trains plying between Chinese and European cities transported in 2014 by 200 percent. more containers than in the previous year, a strong upward trend likely to continue in the coming years – predicting branch employees of DHL logistics company in Shanghai. Andrew Juchniewicz with PAIiIZ expressed the hope that in the future large-scale trains will operate to China Polish export products, especially food. Meanwhile, the vast majority of containers transported by train travels from China to Europe and the European side carriers are having trouble filling up warehouses goods.
The cost-effectiveness of rail transport from China to Europe due to, among others, that these connections are subsidized by local governments Chinese cities. Paying extra for trains, city authorities also indirectly subsidize Chinese exports. In Europe, no one pays for trains heading to China.
The New Silk Road is a gigantic project promoted by the Administration of the President of China Xi Jinping in the autumn of 2013. It consists of “one belt and one pathway,” which mean, respectively, network of sea and land China with Europe – its biggest trading partner.
As noted by the project manager of the EU-China Centre for Eastern Studies (OSW) Marcin Kaczmarski, the New Silk Road initiative is not limited to the construction of logistics infrastructure. It is becoming a key tool for Chinese foreign policy and build soft power (soft power) of the country.
