Russia: IKEA suspected major tax fraud, the world – Republic

Russian investigators say that in the summer of 2011 IKEA has concluded the contract of purchase and sale of shares of subsidiary, Ikea Mos, the owner of 14 Mega shopping centres throughout Russia, for the sum of 35 billion rubles. The buyer was a German IKEA Einrichtungs.

according to the investigation, the amount of the sale was five times lower than the market value of the company, so the Swedish furniture giant has avoided to pay 32 billion rubles in taxes, writes the Russian “Kommersant”.

IKEA is, in principle, recognized the manipulation, but thanks to the agreement on the avoidance of double taxation, decided to pay the tax, but in Germany. However, according to the Russians IKEA Einrichtungs paid only a small portion of the tax – 8 million rubles. According to the investigation, is a fraud.

IKEA denies that there was fraud. His lawyers stress that everything was in accordance with the provisions of the agreement for avoidance of double taxation between Germany and Russia since 1996.
