– Poles have some of the longest holiday leave in the European Union – said in a broadcast Puls economy PR24 Dominika Staniewicz, Minister. Labor market Economic Shadow Cabinet BCC. – We also have a lot of national holidays that are free from work. In addition, if the holiday falls on a Sunday, you have to pay for a day off. Also, this free is really a lot, but there are countries where the leave is less. But I am not convinced that the extension of leave is a good direction – added expert.
the EU Directive on extending the leave is to be ready by the end of 2014. Its implementation into national legislation will be possible only after its adoption by the European parliament. Let’s see how much flexibility in the length of holiday leave to remain in the hands of the authorities of the Member States of the EU.
For longer holidays can afford richer countries
The length of leave should be linked to income level rating, in turn, Puls economy Jakub Borowski, chief economist at Credit Agricole Bank Poland.
– Wealthy countries can afford such a debate and possibly increase the number of days holidays. In the Polish case, we have 68 per cent. of the EU average in terms of per capita income. The road to a level that represents developed countries, is therefore still far away, so there is no basis for this, to think of lengthening the size of annual leave. We have still a lot of work – said Borowski.
As noted, however, according to the OECD, Poland is in the forefront of countries when it comes to the length of time spent on professional activity.
However, in the planning and performance of work we still have a lot of catching up to do – says Dominic Staniewicz.
Changes parental leave?
Meanwhile, in the president Bronislaw Komorowski, the idea of such changes in parental leave, which would protect women returning to work after childbirth, before receiving the notice.
– It the idea of the President to arrange these differently, to allow mothers to return to work and work, eg. at half-time. Thus extended by as much time as they spend at work, leave a parent, but not more than three years. Expressed course approval by the employer to such a solution, and when a parent declares the desire at the very beginning – explained the assumptions proposed amendments Dominic Staniewicz.
Pros and cons of the proposed changes
on the advantages and disadvantages of such a proposal pointed, in turn, Jakub Borowski.
– the advantage is no doubt that this first period of absence from work can be reduced, which from the point of view of competitiveness of women on the labor market is a value. Faster return to work makes it possible to maintain contact with the profession. While extending the period during which the maternity leave will be used, it is a risk factor for women. From the employer’s perspective this raises because the uncertainty regarding the operation at a woman who may use vacation for three years – said Borowski.
In his opinion, it is worth considering that part of the leave could only be used by fathers.
– You have to look for a solution, in which the burden of child care will be more evenly distributed between both parents – said Borowski. She said Dominic Staniewicz, such a proposal is already.
