The ECB does not emit 500 euro banknotes – Polish Radio

This will happen by the end of 2018 years. The ECB has not decided, however, to complete withdrawal from circulation of banknotes.

 

The ECB made a decision to discontinue the issue, because I received a lot of signals that banknotes in denominations of 500 euro are primarily used by terrorists and criminals, rarely encountered in everyday life. Five Hundred is reluctantly accepted in shops Eurozone, or petrol stations.
However, as admitted by experts, the full withdrawal of banknotes in denominations of 500 euro would be difficult and costly. It was therefore decided that the ones that are already in circulation will remain valid indefinitely as a means of payment in the euro area. They will also be constantly exchanged in banks of euro area countries.
