Four two-part trains bought from Vulcano Newagu Sicilian carrier Ferrovia Circumetnea (FCE). Its vehicles run on the narrow-gauge railway line running around the volcano Etna and also support the metro in Catania. As announced Alessandro Di Graziano, CEO of FCE, new trains within a few days will begin to operate sections where clients travel primarily for work and school. In sections where the tourists mainly travel (approx. 20 per cent. Of 2 million passengers), will continue to ride the trains from the old rolling stock. These are 24, but will be gradually replaced with new ones. In addition to the supplied three new (the fourth is still in Poland) FCE has ordered another four Newagu.
The Sicilians were waiting for new trains for years. The youngest were produced in the 80s, the oldest – in the ’60s about new vehicles carrier tried since 2003., But the first order ended a flop. The manufacturer managed to complete only the first draft, it went bankrupt. Several years ago, the order took Newag.
Newag of other manufacturers
How do Michael Szymajda of industry portal Square Station, the trains are modern finish and not deviate from the standard Western European production. Surprising, however, is that the carrier ordered vehicles wysokopodłogowe, which comes to them after a few steps. – In Poland or anywhere else in Europe is already such buys. For about 10 years ordered only low-floor – says Szymajda.
He points out that experience in the construction of narrow-gauge train is a chance for Newagu more orders for this market. It is big not only in Italy but also in Switzerland and Greece. Narrow gauge carriages can, however, produce in Poland as a competitor Newagu, Pesa Bydgoszcz. In Switzerland, the market leader in turn Stadler, although it produces more expensive than the Poles.
The Italian market is one of the most comfortable for Polish manufacturers, because in both countries voltage overhead line is the same. Projects therefore require slight modifications.
Bari, Bulgaria, Austria
President Newagu Zbigniew Konieczek says that it is satisfied with the position that the company is building itself in Europe. He has been in the pocket of another contract, this time five electrified trains for transport to the south of Italy, based in Bari. – No Polish producer even those not exported – says Konieczek.
European orders Newag has more. In preparation for the documentation of trains for Bulgaria, Newag also participates in the tender for locomotives in Austria. The manufacturer has a chance to grow thanks also to 15 million zł funding for the construction of a train of a hybrid (worth 40 million zł), who will be able to ride on the lines of diesel and electrified. It is to be ready in two years.
On Tuesday Newag reported financial results for the first quarter. Consolidated net loss amounted to more than 15 million zł. The manufacturer claims that the result is in line with expectations, and expects better at the end of the year.
